SIBU: Parents and teachers need to find a balance between their children’s involvement in the digital world and the development of their social skills.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee stressed that while it is important for children to be technologically proficient, this should not be at the expense of their social skills.

“Technological advancement is beneficial, and it is essential for our children to be tech-savvy as technology is integral to our lives. However, social skills and personal development are also crucial for helping children become well-rounded individuals. We must start nurturing these skills from a young age,” he said.

He said this in his text speech read out by his representative Kevin Lau at the closing of the Community Development Department (KEMAS) Kindergarten Children’s Potential Day Zone 4 programme at the Sibu district police headquarters badminton court here yesterday (July 31).

Tiang said children are the nation’s future leaders, playing a significant role in economic development and shaping the society of tomorrow.

Meanwhile, on the programme, Tiang believed it can foster a sense of community, perseverance, and self-motivation among children.

“Education is crucial for them, not just academically but also in social activities. Social activities are key to shaping children’s character by developing essential social skills such as communication, teamwork, empathy, and problem-solving,” he added.

At the event, the Sibu parliamentary constituency was named the overall champion of the 2024 Kemas Children’s Potential Day Zone 4.
