SONG (Sept 29): Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has cautioned the people to watch out for those from within and outside the country who are out to disrupt the spirit of unity and harmony.

He said with Malaysia’s economic development being among the highest in Asean right now, there could be parties who would instigate actions to jeopardise this situation.

“Our achievements are good but behind that success, we must also be vigilant.

“Don’t be arrogant; don’t forget that we will also face problems later.

“Don’t let certain groups divide us because I see in Sarawak, there are also small (parties) who sometimes make extreme demands and show hatred.

“If they want to talk and negotiate nicely, I have no problem at all, but if they instil hatred, the reaction will be different,” he said when officiating at ‘Majlis Ramah Mesra Pemimpin Masyarakat Rumah Panjang Bahagian Kapit’ at Rumah Robert Ngumbang in Nanga Sebatu here today.

The event was attended by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, Works Minister Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, Sarawak State Secretary Dato Sri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, Deputy Minister in Sarawak Premier’s Department (Native Customs and Laws) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, and Deputy Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak Datuk Liwan Lagang.

Adding on, Anwar also said he had been criticised in Peninsular Malaysia for ‘giving priority to Sarawak’.

“I answered: ‘I don’t think that I am giving more to Sarawak’.

“I think I should be fair and in many ways, Sarawak lags behind in the rural areas and in terms of basic infrastructure.

“So we helped and now, we are lucky because the Sarawak government is not like it was 10 years ago. There was no money before.

“Now there are many projects such as roads implemented by the state government where they spend billions of ringgit,” he said.

Earlier in his speech, Anwar reminded the people of the importance of political stability in ensuring that the country would continue to progress.

The Prime Minister also praised the leadership of Abang Johari whom he hailed as having succeeded in bringing the good name of Sarawak to countries in Asean.

At the same event, Anwar approved an allocation of RM2 million to build a retaining wall at 53-door Rumah Robert Ngumbang.
