KUCHING: The first Strongman Challenge was held today (June 15) at the PULAPOL Kuching Training Centre, with Commandant SAC Zulfikar Ghazali highlighting the event’s role in promoting health and community cohesion.
“The gathering of elite athletes and fans today showcases the strong community spirit and the push towards a healthier lifestyle,” said Zulfikar.
He thanked the Sarawak Strongman Association and the PULAPOL Kuching Committee, under the leadership of Superintendent Ernest John, for their efforts in organising the event.
Established in 2015, the local Strongman Club gained recognition as the Sarawak Strongman Association in April 2023.
The event featured prominent athletes like Joyce Heng from Sabah and Yong Chee Hang, a national strongman leader.
“Their presence highlights the event’s quality and its contribution to physical and mental fitness,” he said in his closing speech.
He praised the inclusive nature of the competition, which was open to all, providing a platform for participants to showcase their strength in five key movements: carrying, pushing, pulling, lifting, and holding.
These activities trace back to ancient Greek sports but are now celebrated worldwide.
Zulfikar congratulated the winners and teased upcoming events, including the PULAPOL Challenge in September or October, which will integrate running and obstacle courses.
