KUCHING, Dec 5: Work on the Bintawa Hawker Centre roof project will start today and be completed before Christmas.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng said a strong wind had blown away part of the roof of the market. Despite affected stallholders continuing to operate, the lack of roof cover has caused much inconvenience to them.
On the same day of receiving a request letter from the stallholders to replace the roof, Wee said, he brought the request letter to a meeting with Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian at an event. Dr Sim instantly approved the request.
“The project will be completed by Christmas because there will one festival followed by another; for example Christmas and Chinese New Year,” said Wee during the handover of the project agreement to the contractor at Bintawa Market today which was streamed live on his Facebook page.
It is Wee’s hope the project will be completed by December 18 so that the stallholders may operate their businesses in a more conducive environment.
“There is no need for middlemen (to inform MBKS of the needs of residents or business operators in MBKS’ jurisdiction). Inform us directly and we will look for solutions to the issues affecting you,” said Wee.
Apart from handing over the project, Wee also took the opportunity to give away MBKS 2024 calendars to the stallholders and their customers.
After visiting the Bintawa market, Wee’s next stop was Sungai Apong Market. — DayakDaily
