KUCHING (Oct 23): The Borneo International Water and Wastewater Exhibition and Conference (BIWWEC) 2024 has gathered women leaders from across the countries in a powerful panel session at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here today.

The session titled ‘The Unseen Currents’ was moderated by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Learning Network at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia secretary Prof Dr Norhayati Abdullah.

It featured esteemed panel including Fellow at the Academy of Science Malaysia Ir Dr Salmah Zakariah; De La Salle University Manila associate professor Dr Manequiz Redulas; Kuching Water Board general manager Ir Rodziah Mohamad; and a sustainable development professional from Thailand Dr Ampai Harakunarak.

The discussion showcased the panellists’ expertise, focusing on the pivotal roles women play in water management and leadership.

It also highlighted the underrepresentation of women in water governance and emphasised the need for greater recognition and empowerment of female leaders in the sector.

“The significance of women’s contributions in addressing global water challenges cannot be underestimated. By sharing our stories and best practices, we hope to inspire a new generation of women leaders in the field,” said Prof Dr Norhayati.

Ir Rodziah also highlighted the needs for a greater women’s participation in the decision-making levels as she opined that the women’s roles are often merely seen at the forefront of community-based water initiatives.

The session also explored the intersection of gender equity and sustainable water management, underscoring that inclusivity is critical for achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
