KUCHING (July 29): Sarawak recorded an increasing number of open burning cases over the past week.

The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said 97 cases were recorded in the state between July 22 and 28.

According to a Bomba infographic, two open burning cases were recorded on July 22, followed by four cases on July 23, 10 cases on July 24, 14 cases on July 25, 15 cases on July 26, 28 cases on July 27, and 24 cases on July 28.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas had recently cautioned the people against open burning as this could result in fire outbreaks during the current hot and dry spell.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) today issued a Level 1 heatwave warning for eight districts in Sarawak after temperatures reached between 35 degrees Celsius and 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days.

The districts are Telang Usan, Miri, Marudi, Sibu, Kapit, Lubok Antu, Sri Aman, and Kuching.
