SIBU (Sept 23): The close location of houses and strong winds caused the massive fire in Kampung Hilir yesterday evening to spread quickly, said the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).
Bomba Zone 4 chief Andy Alie said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and the total value of losses have yet to be established.
“The fire destroyed 17 houses, with approximately 156 residents affected.
“There were no fatalities or injuries,” he said in a statement today.
He said firefighters from the Sibu Central, Sungai Merah, and Sibu Jaya fire stations raced against time to stop the fire from spreading further with the help of residents.
He added the operation began at 6.46pm and finally ended at 9.58pm.
After the operation, Andy chaired a coordination briefing on the incident at the Sibu Central fire station, which also involved the police and Civil Defence Force (APM).
It is learned that some of the affected residents are putting up with their relatives, while others are seeking temporary shelter at Surau Darul Ma’wa in Kampung Baru.
