KUCHING (Aug 30): Sarawakians must break free from the mental shackles of colonialism and safeguard the state’s political stability from external threats, said Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
In a video message for National Day, he called on the people to remember and appreciate the struggles of past leaders who fought for independence and later formed the Federation of Malaysia.
“Their great sacrifices not only freed us from the chains of colonialism but also helped build a sovereign, independent nation where the people live in unity,” he said in the video released by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas).
Reflecting on this year’s National Day theme, ‘Jiwa Merdeka’, Awang Tengah expressed hope that the public would understand the significance of the celebration.
“Let us free ourselves from the mental constraints of colonialism and continue achieving success without being influenced by external forces that seek to destabilise the political stability we enjoy in Sarawak and Malaysia,” he emphasised.
He urged the public to display the national and state flags in conjunction with National Day and expressed hope that the spirit of patriotism would remain strong within everyone.
“Let us work together to build a brighter future for Sarawak and Malaysia,” he added.
