KUCHING (Sept 18): The Breakthrough Network Charity Run on Monday gathered some 500 enthusiasts, signifying their intention of wanting to contribute to a worthy cause.
Prior to flagging off the run, held on the same day as the Malaysia Day 2024 celebration, Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng stressed that a society could never progress ‘without having caring and compassionate hearts’.
“Everyone plays a role, and everyone has a part. We are not just raising money; we are considering the feelings and the struggles of others and thus, going out to extend support,” he told reporters.
Wee also said the name ‘Breakthrough’ in the fundraising programme, meant to signify the need to sacrifice one’s time and comfort for the greater good.
“By stepping out of our comfort zones, we can truly make a difference.”
The Breakthrough Network, a non-profit organisation, had set out the goal of raising RM100,000 from this event, of which the proceeds would be slated for supporting the education of children from underprivileged families.
The organisation currently operates three education centres: two located in Sibu East, and one at Pine Square Commercial Centre in Batu Kawa here.
Established 16 years ago, Breakthrough Network provides free tutoring to primary and secondary schoolchildren from poor families, and also distributes food to the needy groups.
