Call for equal rewards for Sukma para-athletes

KUCHING (Sept 23): All states sending contingents for the 21st Para Malaysia Games (Para Sukma XXI) should give their para-athletes who win medals equal rewards as their able-bodied counterparts.

In making this call, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim stressed the importance of according the para-athletes the same recognition, in honouring their efforts in bringing pride to their respective states.

“I would want to highlight that the para-athletes are facing greater challenges than their able-bodied counterparts, and they deserve the very same rewards – even more.

“That’s why we must appreciate and acknowledge their struggles and sacrifices,” he said during a press conference at the Para Sukma XXI Media Centre in at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatics Centre today.

Moreover, the federal deputy minister encouraged parents to support and motivate their children with disabilities (PwD) to take up and be actively involved in sports.

“I acknowledge that some parents still feel hesitant, or lack confidence in letting their PwD children be involved in athletic activities.

“Participation in sports, whether in Para Sukma or other competitions, can actually play a crucial role in shaping a secure future for them.

“Malaysia has produced many successful athletes who have emerged from the same system. So, do not be afraid to encourage your children to be involved in sports,” he pointed out.

Adam Adli also gave assurance that his ministry would continue to provide as many platforms as possible to support PwD individuals achieve success in sports.
