The mangrove swamp area in Sampadi would be an excellent area for the relevant departments to consider for inclusion as a totally protected area.

Tanjung Datu assemblyman Azizul Annuar Adenan said the state budget for 2024 has touched on promoting environmental sustainability through ongoing programmes, including forest landscape restoration, totally protected area, and wildlife protection and management.

“I am particularly interested in these two programmes as my constituency has an abundance of mangrove swamps.

“These mangrove swamps have proven to be a priceless resource in our landscape, serving as a very effective carbon sink and an excellent deterrent against coastal erosion.

“It is my desire that more mangroves can be replanted in my area, primarily in Sampadi, to ensure continuity and maintain the greenery in the area.”

Addressing the State Legislative Assembly during his debate speech on the 2024 State Budget, Azizul commended the government’s efforts to designate one million hectares of the state landmass by 2025.

“This is indeed a mammoth task but I’m sure it is achievable. With regard to this matter, the mangrove swamp area in Sampadi would be an excellent area for the relevant departments to consider to be included as a totally protected area.

“Additionally, certain areas in my constituency could also be considered under programmes such as Heart of Borneo or Sarawak Delta Geopark.”
