Call to emulate Japanese initiative on urban challenges

KUCHING: Cities in Sarawak can draw a leaf from a Japanese initiative in facing urban challenges as society evolves.

Deputy Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, said the state must learn from the 100-year initiative launched by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which aims to promote green infrastructure to confront urban challenges.

“This project aims to expand green spaces to enrich the lives of communities and work alongside urban residents. What is remarkable about this initiative is the long-term commitment invested in it. Imagine planning for 100 years ahead.

“It is hoped that agencies in Sarawak, particularly the local authorities, can emulate this hopeful and positive initiative,” he said..

He made these remarks at the closing of the Sarawak Urban Forum (SUF) 1.0 held at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre on Tuesday (Oct 22).

Dr Abdul Rahman also encouraged local authorities in Sarawak to pay serious attention to the establishment and development of Children’s Councils in their respective areas.

He explained that children are the future heirs of Malaysia and Sarawak, and what is left for them now will shape their lives in the future.

“We need to provide a platform for them to get involved and voice their opinions and ideas on urban development issues.

“I am confident that our children have many innovative and fresh ideas to create a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment,” he said.

Moving forward, he hoped for more collaboration and cooperation at the ministry, department, and agency levels.

Quoting Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg’s speech during the opening ceremony, he stressed that for the well-being of communities and social inclusivity in Sarawak, collaborations between agencies, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), strategic partners, and all related parties must continue.

“Social issues and problems are too complex to be tackled in isolation. Integrated, collaborative, and holistic approaches are required. Let us work together hand in hand,” he said.

Also present at the event were Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) Mayor Datuk Hilmy Othman, Special Officers of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development Lt. Gen. Datuk Stephen Mundaw and Datuk Mazlan Mohd Salleh, DBKU council member Datuk Grunsin Ayom, Kota Samarahan Municipal Council chairman Datuk Peter Minos, Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, and DBKU director Mohamed Khaidir Abang.
