THERE is a need to increase the number of community leaders and village chiefs (KMKKs) in the Tanjong Batu constituency.
According to assemblyman Johnny Pang, while the population of Tanjong Batu has increased significantly over the years, it is disheartening that the constituency currently only has 10 Kapitan, four village chiefs and one Penghulu.
“Yes, we have submitted our request and proposal to increase the number of KMKKs earlier this year, including the proposal of creating special positions for ‘tuai rumah’ in the town area because the number of Dayaks and Orang Ulu in the town area has increased threefold through the years.
“We really hope and pray that this proposal can be given the utmost attention because the KMKKs are the important link between the government and the people,” he said during the debate on the 2024 State Budget at the State Legislative Assembly sitting today (Nov 23).
Pang also addressed the persistent issue of flash floods in the constituency and urged the relevant authorities to upgrade the drainage systems in residential areas.
Regarding previous discussions, he mentioned plans for dredging Sungai Sibiu to address the flood issue along the river.
“I hope that there is proper planning to tackle the issue of illegal squatters along Sungai Sibiu. It has to be dealt with appropriately before carrying out any master plan along Sungai Sibiu, and I hope the relevant department will enlighten us on what measures are taken on handling the illegal squatters.”
