SIBU (Aug 19): Sibu Hospital director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu laments about the attitude of some people when it comes to detection and treatment of cancer.
He reiterates the importance of undergoing regular check-ups, especially when one experiences symptoms that may be linked to cancer.
According to him, with detection, diagnosis and proper treatment, ‘things can change’ and thus, help improve the quality of life of a cancer patient.
“The behaviour of many Sarawakians, in terms of taking care of their health, is not up to the mark.
“They come very late to seek treatment at the hospital and when that happens, there is nothing much that we can do for them.
“What we see is just the tip of the iceberg. There are many cancer patients who are not seeking treatment due to lack of awareness, and also the stigma associated with cancer,” he said when met at the ‘Grolite Blood Donation and GoBald 2024 Satellite Shave’ event here yesterday.
The event marked the first partnership between Grolite Group and Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS).
On this programme, Dr Nanthakumar hoped such it could promote and create public awareness, especially in children who had not sought cancer treatment yet.
“I want to take this opportunity to reach out to those staying far from towns with no access to treatment and no knowledge on their illness, as well as parents of children who still have stigma towards cancer and whatever issues, to come and find us – we are willing to help.
“Early treatment can change the quality of life of cancer patients,” he said.
Meanwhile, a total of RM77,530 was raised from the event where 27 individuals, including Dr Nanthakumar, had their heads shaved.
At the same event, Grolite Group also presented RM39,000 to Dr Nanthakumar, meant for the purchase of medical equipment for the Paediatric Oncology Ward at Sibu Hospital.
Among those present were Grolite Group chairman Dato Sri Song Tiing Seng, Grolite Business Development manager Sandra Song, and SCCS events and marketing manager Genevieve Tan.
