MIRI: The Car-Free Day here this morning (Jan 27) saw an impressive turnout, with over 500 participants, including local residents and environmental enthusiasts.

The event, organised by the Miri City Council (MCC), aimed to transform Miri into a greener, healthier, and more sustainable city.

Miri deputy mayor Cr Arrifin Mohamad, officiated at the morning’s programme, which emphasised the promotion of a low-carbon lifestyle, community bonding, and boosting the happiness index of the city’s inhabitants.

“This initiative is a testament to our commitment to sustainability, community engagement, and creating a city that prioritises the wellbeing of its residents. Your participation and collaboration are crucial to the success of this endeavour, and I have no doubt that together, we can make our city a shining example of sustainable urban living,” said Ariffin.

Ariffin further elaborated that the vision for Miri City Car-Free Day extends beyond just reducing traffic for a single day.

“Imagine the possibilities: community markets, cultural performances, fitness activities, and more – all in a car-free environment that focuses on people and our shared spaces,” he said.

“Starting this month, and on a monthly basis, we will close our streets to vehicular traffic, creating vibrant, pedestrian-friendly spaces for everyone to enjoy. This is an opportunity to rediscover the joy of walking, cycling, and exploring our city without the constraints of cars. I encourage you all to participate, bring your families, and make it a community affair,” he added.
