‘Cat litter’ disguise blown as 80.35kg syabu haul worth RM4 mln seized in Bintulu

BINTULU, Sept 15: A shipment masquerading as cat litter has landed among Bintulu’s biggest drug busts this year, with Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Sarawak seizing 80.35 kilogrammes of syabu worth more than RM4 million.

Sarawak Customs director Datuk Norizan Yahya said intelligence-led monitoring and surveillance over 12 days led authorities to uncover the syndicate, which had concealed the drugs in packages declared as Tofu Cat Litter.

“On Aug 28, a team of Customs officers from the Enforcement Branch of JKDM Bintulu and the Narcotics Branch, JKDM headquarters, conducted surveillance on several packages sent to a premises in Bintulu town.

“The packages were declared as Tofu Cat Litter, but inspection found them to contain compressed blocks suspected to be syabu or methamphetamine,” he said at the JKDM Sarawak Media Conference No. 9/2026 at the JKDM Bintulu office here today, as reported by TVS.

The seized drugs weighed 80,356.33 grammes and were estimated to be worth RM4,017,816.50.

Norizan said the syndicate was believed to have disguised the drug packages as commercial goods and used fictitious recipient information to avoid detection by the authorities.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

If convicted, offenders can face the death penalty or life imprisonment and, if sentenced to life imprisonment, whipping of not less than 12 strokes.

Norizan also urged the public to channel information on suspected smuggling activities to the authorities, assuring that informants’ identities would be kept confidential. — DayakDaily
