THE Sarawak Ombudsman Bill serves as check and balance in government agencies and ultimately, creates good governance.

Safiee Ahmad (GPS-DARO) pointed out that the bill served as a warning and reminder to departments, ministries and organisations to improve their services and receive all suggestions for improvement and to protect the welfare of community members from being persecuted.

“Because of it, administrative officers and managers are not free to abuse their power and positions and the efficiency of the administration and management will improve.

“Therefore, I would also like to suggest that this good Ombudsman Bill is also adopted by the Federal government so that uniform actions can be coordinated in strengthening integrity and improving the quality of the service delivery system to the people.

“Sarawak’s development goals and policies will also be achieved, perhaps earlier than expected in 2030,” he said in his speech when debating on the bill which was tabled by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan yesterday (Nov 20).

Safiee added the tabling of the bill proved the seriousness of the Sarawak government under the leadership of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg who was far-sighted and proactive in ensuring that Sarawak’s public service had a high level of integrity.

“The role of the ombudsman is to ensure that those who have power use it correctly and respect the people’s fundamental rights. It is also seen as very necessary to help deal with bureaucratic problems.

“The presence of the ombudsman gives confidence not only to the people in the public service but also to investors, especially from abroad,” he said.

“Introducing the Ombudsman Bill is important to ensure transparency, accountability and fairness in government operations.

“This effort will undoubtedly contribute to the acceptance of a responsive and responsible government that looks after and serves the best interests of the people,” he said.

Safiee also stated that he strongly supported the Ombudsman Bill.
