KUCHING (Aug 28): The recent Mid-Autumn Festival celebration here coincided with the inauguration ceremony for the new board of directors of Persatuan Klan Hu Kiu Leuk Iek Wong Malaysia and Persatuan Klan Liing Hung Wong Kuching (2024).
A statement from the two associations yesterday said the event gathered leaders, representatives, advisors, clan members, and representatives from various associations in a lively and warm dinner atmosphere in celebrating the festival and reinforcing family ties.
Among the attendees were Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Commercial Counsellor of the Chinese Consulate in Kuching Gao Li, and Foochow Association Sarawak president Kapitan Dato Lau Sie Lok representing World Federation of Fuzhou Associations Ltd executive president Dato Sri Lau Wei Kiong.
In his speech, Persatuan Klan Liing Hung Wong Kuching (2024) president John Wong Chiew Shin, expressed gratitude for overcoming the decade-long effort and challenges to establish Kuching Liing Hung Wong Clan Association.
“The achievement is a testament to the family’s strength and unity which are the foundation for future progress,” he said as quoted in the statement.
During the event, clan members shared their wish for family harmony and prosperity, symbolised by the full moon of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Board chairman and chief sponsor of the event James Wong Hua Kiong in his address said the celebration was not only a family reunion but also a reflection of the clan’s unity and heritage.
He highlighted the importance of family as the foundation of society and a source of cohesion, urging members to participate actively in family affairs and uphold traditions.
Meanwhile, the statement said Gao in his speech noted the strong economic and trade cooperation between China and Sarawak, which has expanded into emerging fields like the digital economy and renewable energy.
“Gao also praised the Huang clan for their role in preserving Chinese culture and contributing to business and society,” it added.
Wee in his speech congratulated the organisers for a successful event and commended the positive impact of Sarawak’s recent policies, particularly those promoting ethnic harmony and national unity.
The mayor also emphasised the role of family associations in local development, and encouraged the continued promotion of Chinese culture to contribute to Sarawak’s prosperity.
Wei Kiong, in a speech delivered by Sie Lok, said multi-ethnic social unity is essential for national stability, and praised Sarawak’s harmonious multiculturalism as a model for Malaysia.
“Wei Kiong also acknowledged James’ contributions to clan unity and cultural preservation,” said the statement.
