KUCHING (July 23): The Ho Soon Physical Culture Club held a flag-raising ceremony at the Kuching Sentral Bus Terminal here yesterday in conjunction with Sarawak Day.
The celebration featured cultural activities and performances by children and was supported by Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap’s office with a funding of RM3,000.
Chinese community leaders were also invited to grace the event.
During the ceremony, the club’s chairman Roland Teo said the celebration hoped to raise awareness about the significance of Sarawak Day.
“Today marks the 61st birthday of Sarawak and its independence from British colonial rule. Through this celebration on this auspicious day, we are made aware of the state’s history and thus evoke Sarawakians’ enthusiasm towards defending our rights and autonomy,” he said.
He also supported the call for the history of Sarawak Day to be incorporated into the syllabus of primary and secondary schools to ensure the younger generation is kept well-informed about Sarawak’s historical events.
Among those present were Padawan Municipal Council chairman Tan Kai, Temenggong Dato Tan Joo Phoi, Penghulu Tan Heng Kee and Sarawak Housing Estate Developers Association advisor Dato Sim Kiang Chiok.
