PUTATAN (Feb 12): Chinese New Year celebrations should serve as a meaningful platform to foster greater understanding of cultural diversity and strengthen unity among all segments of the community, said Putatan MP Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.

He noted that the celebration observed by the Chinese community not only preserves rich cultural traditions but also symbolises the strong spirit of unity in Sabah, a state widely recognised for its racial harmony.

Shahelmey explained that such unity serves as a catalyst for Sabah’s continued progress, in line with the aspirations of the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor in implementing the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) 2.0 roadmap.

“Here in Putatan, we remain committed to providing services to all segments of society – whether Bumiputera or Chinese — ensuring that no one is left behind,” he said.

He highlighted that one of the main agendas under the SMJ 2.0 direction is the continuous development of human capital, emphasising education and ongoing training as key pillars of progress.

Shahelmey, who is also Sabah Oil and Gas Development Corporation (SOGDC) chairman, said this after officiating the SJKC Hwa Shiong Chinese New Year Carnival.

Also present were Sabah United Chinese Chambers of Commerce (SUCCC) president Datuk Micheal Lui Yen Sang, the school’s Board of Management chairman Chung Wan Kiong, and headmaster Chung Tek Fei.

Commenting on the programme, Shahelmey said continued community contributions, particularly in education, form the backbone of Putatan’s multiracial bonds.

He shared that the majority of students at the school are Bumiputera Sabah children, with about 10 per cent comprising pupils from the Chinese community.

“This development is a positive indicator that Bumiputera families recognise the importance of Chinese-medium education and the advantages it offers students,” he added.
