KOTA SAMARAHAN: The ‘Stop Rabies Programme’ will be organised on July 27 – 28 at Taman Samarindah Stakan Unity Hall.

Organising chairperson of Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) Standing Committee on Community Development and Tourism, Councillor Dr. Florince Christy, invited dog owners to take part in this initiative.

“Vaccination and proper licensing are critical steps in ensuring the health and safety of our communities.
“We are committed to making Kota Samarahan a rabies-free zone, and with the support of our partners and the community, we believe we can achieve this goal,” she said.

The two-day programme aims to provide essential services such as vaccination, microchipping, spaying, and promoting responsible pet ownership.

“This event is in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for good health and well-being, sustainable cities and communities, and partnerships for goals,” she said during the press conference at MPKS yesterday.

To encourage dog owners to license their pets, MPKS is offering special incentives.

“We are providing a RM10 discount voucher for the dog license fee and a RM150 subsidy for dog boarding, limited to the first 100 dogs licensed on that day.

“The licensing fee is RM10 for tagged dogs and RM30 for dogs without tags,” she said.
This programme is implemented in collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim, Sarawak Veterinary Department, Samarahan Health Department, Samarahan District Office, Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA), KRT Taman Samarindah Baru, and KRT Taman Samarindah Lama.

“This collaboration emphasises the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing public health concerns and improving community well-being,” she stated.

Florence added that her team has also organised a competition on Stop Rabies Poster among primary school students.

The competition offers attractive prizes whereby the champion will receive RM 120 cash, a trophy, and a certificate.

The first runner-up will receive RM80 cash, a trophy, and a certificate meanwhile the second-runner up will receive RM50 cash, a trophy, and a certificate.

There will also be 30 consolation prizes, each participant will receive a trophy and certificate.

“We encourage all primary school children to participate in the poster competition as it is a good opportunity to raise awareness about rabies and involve the young in fighting this disease,” she added.

The closing date for students to submit their artwork is on July 25 at 4pm.

Application forms can be downloaded via MPRK website, Facebook, and from the council’s library.
