SIBU: The renovation of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Sibu branch Sa’ati Hall bears significant meaning for party members, said its president Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.

The three-shoplot building, which was purchased in 1989, at a total cost of RM900,000 was funded by donations from hundreds of party members and supporters.

“This building is our home, and Sibu is our home, where SUPP began. This is where our spirit of fighting for Sarawak, with members from different backgrounds, began 65 years ago,” he said.

Dr Sim who is Deputy Premier was speaking at the SUPP Sibu Sa’ati Hall renovation completion luncheon at Kampung Datu here today (July 31).

He urged its members to continue to fight for Sarawak’s rights, particularly those enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

He also emphasised the need for nation-building to further develop Sarawak and achieve its goal to be a developed state by 2030.

“If Sarawak is doing well, Malaysia will also be doing well. So, please pray for and support us, regardless of your background,” he added.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Datuk Michael Tiang said the hall’s renovation cost about RM60,000, donated by party members from all six SUPP branches in the town and its supporters.

He stressed that doubts and criticisms by outsiders that the six SUPP branches in Sibu are not united are completely wrong.

“We all work together to overcome all kinds of challenges. Together, like this one, we managed to raise the money under the leadership of SUPP Nangka chairman Chua Beng Seng,” he added.

Tiang hoped the party can open up Sa’ati Hall for public use.
