Convenience store attacks: Hunt on for masked men

KUCHING: Police have launched a manhunt for two masked men involved in arson and explosive attacks targeting convenience stores in Kuching and Sri Aman on Sunday (Sept 20).

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Muhamad Zainal Abdullah confirmed receiving two police reports regarding the incidents, which involved suspects throwing explosive firecrackers and flammable objects into the premises.

Initial investigations revealed a similar modus operandi in both cases, involving two masked male suspects dressed in dark clothing entering the stores before hurling explosive or flammable devices inside.

“The acts triggered explosions, property damage, and a fire in one of the locations. No casualties or severe injuries were reported.

“We have also advised several other premises affected by similar incidents that have yet to file official reports to lodge them immediately to facilitate ongoing investigations,” he said in a statement Monday.

The case is being investigated under Section 436 of the Penal Code for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy a house or building, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years’ imprisonment and a fine upon conviction.

Police are currently tracking down the suspects, analysing the materials used, reviewing CCTV footage, and establishing potential links between the attacks.

Addressing viral social media claims alleging that the targeted convenience stores were involved in selling online gambling reloads, police stated that these claims will be investigated.

“If proven true, enforcement action will be taken, including requesting local authorities to revoke the business licenses of the involved premises,” added Mohamad Zainal.

Members of the public are advised to refrain from making speculations that could jeopardise the investigation.

Business owners have been urged to heighten security measures and immediately report suspicious individuals or vehicles to the authorities.
