KUCHING (Oct 15): Sarawak has the potential to achieve significant economic growth by building a thriving creative economy much like Indonesia, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Datuk Snowdan Lawan.

He said the transformative potential of creativity for the state’s economy and cultural identity could replicate Indonesia’s success by tapping into local creativity in arts, crafts and performing arts.

“In Indonesia, the creative economy contributes about US$22 billion annually, with a dedicated ministry overseeing its development. Across Southeast Asia, this sector generates over US$200 billion,” he said in his speech at the launch of What About Kuching (WAK) All About Art exhibition at The Spring Shopping Mall here today.

He said thus, if Sarawak’s creative economy is properly developed, it would generate immense economic opportunities.

Snowdan highlighted the WAK All About Art exhibition as an example, which showcases Sarawak’s unique artistic talents, including sculptures made from driftwood and recycled materials, and how creativity can spur innovation and generate income.

He also commended the WAK team, led by Donald and Marina Tan, alongside curator Edric Ong, for their dedication in organising the exhibition.

Themed ‘Elements of Nature’, the exhibition captures Sarawak’s natural beauty and features artwork inspired by wood, metal, water, earth, fire and wind.

“This theme aligns with our ministry’s vision of Sarawak — More to Discover,” he said.

In addition to WAK’s success since 2017, Snowdan also said its expansion to Sibu and Miri as satellite festivals this year as extending the festival’s reach throughout Sarawak.

Looking to the future, he also shared plans for the Borneo Craft Global Expo in Kuching this November and hinted at Sarawak’s potential participation in the Revelations Paris 2025 exhibition.

“This will be a major milestone, allowing our local artists to showcase their talents internationally at the Grand Palais,” he said.

The WAK Festival will be held until Oct 30 and features various events celebrating Sarawak’s vibrants arts and culture scene.
