KUCHING (July 24): It is crucial for the police to have knowledge and skills related to cybercrimes, especially with the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies, said Kuching district police chief ACP Ahsmon Bajah

He pointed out that the emergence of new technologies has created opportunities for various cybercrimes, including defamation and efforts to discredit the government, leaders, individuals and even royalty.

“I urge personnel to continuously improve their skills to face these new challenges,” he told reporters after the police district’s monthly assembly this morning.

He also revealed that when cybercrimes first emerged, there were no laws related to computers thus a pioneer team from Bukit Aman was then formed to learn how to combat cybercrimes.

“The police have plans, and I would like to remind everyone to learn and improve ourselves as we must enhance our knowledge to stay on par with criminals,” he added.

Ahsmon also pointed out that AI and technology enable crimes without borders, making it essential to know how to fight them.

He said under the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), a specialised unit has been established to handle and manage cybercrimes.

This unit is tasked with monitoring social media and other digital platforms, where AI can now automate malicious activities without human intervention.

“This year, there have been no reported cases of cyberbullying in Kuching, only cases related to scams,” said Ahsmon.

He also mentioned that since 2022, the district police have achieved a 100 per cent resolution rate for managing lost victims, with all cases being resolved within the stipulated timeframe and the victims found safe.

“The important factor is that we have solved these cases quickly, not just based on the number of cases. We are proud and thankful to the people, including families, who have worked closely with the police for their assistance and cooperation,” he added.
