KUCHING (Sept 3): The construction of a telecommunication tower in residential areas should involve active engagement with local residents, said Democratic Action Party (DAP) Sarawak member Michael Kong.
Kong, a special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen, said he was made aware of complaints from residents living near a public park at Lorong Kempas 3C here, who claimed they were kept in the dark about the development of the tower.
“It was only recently when surveyors appeared on site, marking the ground and identifying locations, that the residents became aware of the plans,” he said in a statement.
Kong stressed that it is crucial for contractors and authorities to engage with the residents whenever projects are being planned within residential areas.
“Proper communication is not just a courtesy, but a necessity to maintain trust and ensure that the needs and concerns of the community are fully addressed.”
Kong said the residents were perplexed by the need for another 5G telecommunication tower in the vicinity, particularly when there is already a 5G tower located just 350 metres away at Lorong Song 3G.
“Keeping residents in the dark and moving forward with any projects without prior consultation can lead to unnecessary anxiety and frustration within the community,” he said.
Kong said he will be working closely with the residents to seek further clarification about the development of the telecommunication tower.
“I strongly urge all involved parties to prioritise clear, open, and proactive communication with the community. No one should be left to live with uncertainty about developments that affect their lives and homes.”
