MIRI: Chief of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) Socialist Youth (Dapsy) Sarawak, Peter Hee Leh Kheng, has expressed dissatisfaction with the Miri City Council (MCC) over the prolonged delay in repairing Taman Awam’s suspension bridge.
Hee urged elected representatives in Miri, including Miri mayor cum Pujut assemblyman, Adam Yii, Minister of Transport Sarawak Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, and Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting, to expedite the repairs.
“Many elected representatives, including the mayor of Miri, have previously assured the allocation of funds for the park’s repairs, yet no action has been taken,” Hee stated when contacted yesterday.
The Miri public park has been closed to the public since 2019, a situation that Hee regarded as deeply disappointing.
He emphasised the importance of the park as a tourist attraction in Miri City and demanded an explanation from Mayor Adam Yii for the delay and the steps being taken to accelerate the repair work.
“This public park is crucial for Miri tourism. We, as residents of Miri, are very disappointed and embarrassed by the delay in these repairs,” Hee said.
He dismissed any excuses about lack of provisions, suggesting that if needed, assistance could be sought from the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Nga Kor Ming.
Recently, the MCC announced that the Miri public park would remain closed for another four months to facilitate the repair of the suspension bridge.
The park which was developed in 1997 covers an area of 24.6 acres and have numerous unique facilities.
