KUCHING: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Khaled Nordin has stressed the critical need for ongoing investments in Malaysia’s armed forces to uphold national security and stability.
Speaking at a press conference during his visit to the Penrissen Army Camp today (Aug 8), he noted that maintaining security incurs costs even during peacetime.
“Security itself is a cost. It’s not just war we have to prepare for, but also ensuring peace in the country.
“There’s a necessity for the public to understand and accept government expenditures on the military,” he said.
Addressing the security situation at Sarawak’s borders, he acknowledged the challenges and detailed ongoing efforts to bolster border security, including the addition of new border posts and equipment donations from the Sarawak government.
He outlined several projects aimed at enhancing defence capabilities in Sarawak, such as a RM303 million investment in land defence and a RM70 million allocation for military equipment.
“Additional investments include the installation of radar systems and the construction of a naval base in Bintulu,” he added.
He also announced the establishment of a task force to ensure the efficient execution of these projects, as part of the ministry’s programme to strengthen Sarawak’s defence from 2024 to 2030.
He emphasised the importance of providing adequate housing for military personnel, noting a RM42 million allocation for housing improvements in Sarawak.
He affirmed the ministry’s commitment to ensuring that Sarawak and Malaysia remain safe and sovereign, aligning the development of the security sector with the region’s economic growth.
