SIBU (July 10): A disabled woman perished in a fire involving three houses at Kampung Bahagia Jaya in Jalan Teku here today.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Sibu chief Andy Ali said the remains of Kong Kim Ngin, 52, was discovered behind one of the houses during the course of the firefighting operation.

“Firefighters were unaware about the victim until family members at the scene informed that she had failed to emerge from their house,” he said.

He added that all three wooden houses were completely razed, rendering 26 persons homeless.

A total of 18 personnel from the Sungai Merah fire station was dispatched to the scene, located about 15km away, following a distress call at 8.14am.

Assisting the operation were personnel from the Sibu Central fire station.

“The fire was brought under control at 8.29am and fully extinguished at 10.55am,” said Andy.

He said the victim’s remains were handed over to police for further action.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, and losses have yet to be ascertained.
