KUCHING, Sept. 16: Malaysia Day celebrations not only commemorate a date in the calendar but also remind people of the importance of unity, mutual respect and living together in diversity.

Senator Wilfred Yap Yau Sin, a member of the Sentosa City State Assembly (ADUN), said that Sarawak is made up of diverse racial, religious and ethnic backgrounds, but these differences should not be the cause of division.

"In diversity, we are united. In differences, we respect each other", he said at Sejambak Kasih Program, which is the delivery of food stamps for Sambutan Hari Malaysia 2026 to residents in DUN Kota Sentosa area here today.

He said that while the food stamps seem modest, the real value of the program is not in the items delivered but in the concern and affection of fellow members of society.

"We want to make sure no one in our community feels left out or forgotten", she said.

He said that the spirit of inclusiveness practiced in Sarawak also ensures the welfare and well-being of people can be felt by all regardless of race, religion or background.

As a representative of the people, he said, his responsibility is not only focused on physical development such as roads, slopes and public facilities but also includes listening to the voice of the people and understanding the needs of society.

"I believe that a strong community is not only measured through development, but also by the way we care for each other", he said.

In this regard, he called on the society to continue upholding the harmony enjoyed in Sarawak and not let differences be a source of division.

On the contrary, he said, diversity should be a joint force in building safer, more stable, inclusive and prosperous Sarawak and Malaysia.
