BINTULU (Aug 7): The Department of Environment (DoE) has inspected several factories in the industrial areas of Nyigu, Kemena, and Jepak to locate the source of a persistent foul odour.
Branch chief Abdul Mazli Hafiz Abdul Malik said the mysterious odour has lingered over the industrial areas since last week and affected villages nearby.
“Yesterday our team combed through factories in the area, searching for the elusive source of the foul smell.
“However, the actual cause has not yet been identified. We have also conducted periodic patrols in Kampung Baru to determine the type of smell,” he said when contacted.
Abdul Mazli said the department had received calls from concerned residents in the affected areas.
Last week, the issue of the foul odour went viral on social media, with the public urging relevant agencies to conduct immediate inspections to find the source of the air pollution.
Residents have reported headaches and nausea caused by the overwhelming stench, which is especially strong late night and early morning.
Abdul Mazli said his team has also spoken to residents as part of the investigation.
“Interviews with villagers were conducted this morning to gather more information about the smell,” he said.
He assured villagers that their concerns would not go unheard and that the department is gathering more evidence.
He promised intensified inspections would be carried out, focusing on the factories most likely to emit the offensive odour.
“The team will begin nighttime inspections and patrols tonight to find the source of the foul smell,” he added.
