KUCHING, July 11: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Amar Fadillah Yusof has proposed that the Institut Kefahaman Islam Malaysia Sarawak (IKMAS) be developed into a centre of excellence to nurture future Islamic leaders and thinkers in Sarawak and the wider Nusantara.
According to him, IKMAS should evolve into a platform for developing Islamic leadership, strengthening the Muslim community’s economic resilience and cultivating strong moral character rooted in Islamic values.
“The initiative should be driven jointly by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), the Sarawak Islamic Council (MIS) and other relevant institutions. We are ready to support the effort,” he said.
He said this when officiating a seminar on Sustainability of Nusantara Islamic Thought: Sarawak Prosperous and Progressive 2026M/1448H held at Hikmah Exchange Event Centre today.
He also urged stakeholders to move beyond intellectual discourse and translate ideas into tangible outcomes.
“We have gained knowledge. Now is the time to act. We must gather these ideas and turn them into real action. Otherwise, our seminars will remain just seminars,” he added.
To realise that vision, he called on government agencies, educational institutions and Islamic organisations to work together in shaping future Muslim leaders.
He also highlighted the challenges posed by the digital age, where misinformation has made it increasingly difficult for people to distinguish fact from falsehood.
In addition, Fadillah who is also Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) said Islamic thought, particularly tasawuf, should be integrated into education from an early age to higher education to strengthen character and ensure development is guided by sound values rather than economic progress alone. — DayakDaily
