KUCHING: Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian shared some straight talk about integrity, making it clear that public officials and regular folks need to stick to ethical standards to fight corruption.

According to Dr Sim, integrity isn’t just following the crowd. It starts with each one of us.

He pointed out that there are two kinds of people out there: those who approach you for favours and those who just keep complaining.

At the Ministry of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government’s Integrity Day, Dr Sim emphasised that everyone has a role to play in this fight.

The government has set up systems like the Organization Anti-Corruption Structure, but individuals must also do their part in keeping things clean.

He highlighted the problem of corruption and power misuse, especially in projects meant for the people.

Dr Sim referred to audit reports and cases from agencies like the National Audit Department and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, which revealed a concerning number of arrests related to corruption among civil servants.

Even though the percentage of corrupt cases might be small, Dr Sim stressed the importance of staying vigilant to maintain pride in public service.

He also pointed out that it’s not only the government’s responsibility; the public has a role too. Those involved in giving bribes should face consequences as well.

Despite overseeing numerous responsibilities like 26 local councils and big projects, Dr Sim mentioned that the ministry is doing relatively well regarding integrity.

However, he cautioned against complacency, especially because local councils handle many complaints.

During the event, Dr Sim was joined by other officials like MPHLG deputy ministers Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee and Datuk Dr Penguang Manggil, along with permanent secretary Elizabeth Loh.
