SIBU (July 27): Two local men were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol during a police operation at Jalan Channel here late Friday.

Both individuals are aged 38 and 47, according to Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili.

“They were apprehended during the operation, which ran between 11pm to 1.30am, conducted by the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division (BSPT) of the Sibu district police headquarters.

“The arrest was made under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

“Initial breath tests revealed that the alcohol concentration in both individuals exceeded the limit specified under Section 45A(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” said Zulkipli in a statement today.

On the operation, he said police issued a total of 29 summonses over various offences including having modified exhausts, having improper number plates, failure to fasten helmets, failure to display ‘P’ plates, absence of side mirrors, driving without valid licence, and not wearing seat-belts.

“We advise the public to always comply with road traffic laws, and to never drive under the influence of alcohol so as to ensure your safety and the safety of others,” he added.
