Effective leadership key to community success, says ministry

KUCHING: Visionary, principled, and knowledgeable leaders are key to the success of any community.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Ministry special administrative officer Datuk Dr Rashidah Bolhassan said the Sarawak Community Leaders Leadership Development Programme (ComLEAD) is a platform for community leaders to sharpen their leadership skills.

Also to build cooperative networks, and share experiences along with ideas in addressing today’s challenges.

“I believe that through this programme, we will be able to produce more community leaders capable of tackling various challenges such as sustainable development, environmental conservation, and building a prosperous society.

“Today’s forums, such as ‘21st Century Leadership’ and ‘Environmental and Social Sustainability,’ provide important intellectual discourse in helping us understand the critical issues faced by society nowadays,” she said.

She was officiating at the ComLEAD, representing Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah at the Borneo Cultural Museum (BCM) here Saturday.

She added that the increasingly challenging world needs leaders who can look far ahead, understand the needs of the community, and boldly make changes for the common good.

“Effective leadership is not only determined by the ability to lead but also by the ability to listen, understand, and adapt to the needs of the community,” she said.

Besides, she added that the programme that was organised by the state Gagasan Minda Merdeka Malaysia Organisation (GMM) and Sekretariat Gabungan non-governmental organisations (NGO) Sarawak (GNS) offers participants all the opportunity to delve into these aspects and strengthen their role as agents of change at the community level.

“The cooperation between the government, the private sector, and civil society is essential in ensuring that every development effort can be achieved more effectively.

“The Sarawak government is highly aware of the significant role played by NGOs and civil society organisations  in contributing to community development, especially in rural areas,” she said.

She also said programmes like this will help bridge the gap between these sectors and promote stronger collaboration.
