Elderly man accused of stone-throwing vandalism in Batu Kawa gets one year in jail

KUCHING, June 8: A 69-year-old man was sentenced to one year in prison by the Magistrate’s Court here after admitting to damaging a woman’s van by hurling a stone at the vehicle along Jalan Batu Kawa last year.

Bujang Sanusi pleaded guilty to a charge of mischief before Magistrate Nur Syaheeqa Nazwa Radzali, who handed down the sentence.

The offence stemmed from an incident on July 5, 2025, when the accused allegedly threw a stone at a van travelling near Kampung Sinar Budi Lama at about 7.25pm

The impact shattered the vehicle’s rear passenger-side window, causing an estimated RM900 in damages.

The victim, a 40-year-old woman, subsequently lodged a police report, prompting an investigation by authorities.

Police later arrested the accused on July 9, 2025. Investigations found sufficient evidence linking him to the offence, with a positive identification parade further strengthening the case against him.

Court documents stated that the charge was framed under Section 427 of the Penal Code, which deals with mischief causing damage to property.

The provision carries a punishment of between one and five years’ imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction.

The case was also connected to earlier public complaints involving a man allegedly throwing stones at passing vehicles and nearby buildings in the Batu Kawa area.

During the operation, police detained the suspect and seized several stones believed to be connected to the incidents.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad Aidil Akmal Sharidan appeared for the prosecution, while Bujang was unrepresented. — DayakDaily
