KAPIT (July 13): Spectators gathered early at the waterfront here today to witness the launch of the two-day power boat race, held in connection with the annual Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari 2024.
Deputy Digital Minister and Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong performed the flagging-off to mark the official kick-off of the competition, which recorded over 100 participants.
The federal minister was accompanied by Kapit Resident Galong Luang – also the organising chairman of the safari – and Deputy Resident Robert Liman.
The categories of the power boat race are 50hp (horsepower), 30hp 3 Pistons, 30hp 2 Pistons and 18hp.
The racing teams come from Kapit, Song, Belaga, Kanowit, Bintangor, Mukah, Dalat, Sibu, Bintulu, Miri, and also Brunei.
Adding to the excitement is the presence of hundreds of supporters, the majority of whom are accompanying the respective participating teams.
The Baleh-Kapit Raft Safari marks its 27th edition this year.
The first flag-off took place at Rumah Bajal Chandan in Nanga Kain, from where the paddlers made their way to Rumah Ukau in Nanga Bawai via Kain River and Baleh River.
Today’s flag-off at Rumah Ukau marks the final leg of the race, in which the paddlers race against one another along the Baleh and Rajang rivers, to reach the finish line at Kapit Express Terminal.
