Fire breaks out in ship’s engine room at Sibu jetty, crew safe

SIBU (Aug 28): Nine crew members of a ship berthed at a jetty in Bukit Lan, Jalan Empawah here escaped injury after a fire broke out in the vessel’s engine room today.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said a call on the incident was received at 12.19pm, and a team from the Sungai Merah fire station was rushed to the location.

“Upon arrival, it was informed that the ship’s crew had put out the fire using five portable fire extinguishers and water.

“Bomba personnel proceeded to inspect the engine room to ensure the situation was safe,” it said.

The department said the cause of the fire was not immediately known.
The operation ended at 2.11pm.
