Fire destroys hut, elderly man survives with burns

KUCHING: An elderly man narrowly escaped a fiery death after a small hut at Kampung Tupong Ulu, Jalan Merdeka, engulfed in flames this morning (Oct 3).

According to the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba), the 77-year-old sustained burns to his arms in the 3.02 am incident.

He received initial treatment at the scene before being transported to the hospital for further medical attention.

Meanwhile, the extinguishing efforts were conducted by firefighters from Petra Jaya and Padungan stations.

The fire, which burnt down the 10×7 square feet structure, was brought under control at 3.20am and overhaul works followed to ensure that there is no risk of reignition.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
