KOTA KINABALU (Oct 15): Five students from Sabah who are currently pursuing their studies at the Universiti Keusahawanan Koperasi Malaysia (UKKM) received scholarships from Kumpulan Wang Amanah Pendidikan Koperasi (KWAPd) and Institut Koperasi Malaysia (IKMa).
According to Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Minister Datuk Ewon Benedick, the five students are enrolled in diploma, bachelor’s degree, and master’s degree programs, focusing on business management, cooperatives and entrepreneurship.
“Of the five students, three were offered scholarships from KWAPd, while the other two received sponsorships from IKMa. This is one of my initiatives and the government’s efforts through the Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry to ensure that students from Sabah, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, are not left behind in education,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.
Ewon, who is also the UKKM chancellor, hopes more students, particularly from Sabah, will choose to further their studies at the university.
“Previously, I had requested UKKM to conduct special intakes for students from Sabah and Sarawak. This aligns with my focus on providing additional attention to these two states while reducing the current focus within the ministry,” he said.
Cooperative members’ children, he said, can apply for financial aid provided by his ministry in collaboration with the Malaysian Cooperative Commission (SKM).
“Applications can be made online or directly through me to be forwarded to UKKM for consideration. We will also continue to prioritize students from the B40 income group,” he said.
UKKM, managed by IKMa, an agency under the Ministry of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives, offers study programs ranging from diploma to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) namely, Diploma in Cooperative Management, Diploma in Cooperative Entrepreneurship, Bachelor of Business Administration (Cooperative Management) (Honors), Bachelor of Business Administration (Cooperative Entrepreneurship) (Honors), Master of Business Administration (Cooperative Management), Master of Business Administration (Corporate Leadership) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Entrepreneurship
The general Master of Business Administration (MBA) program will be offered starting January 2025, while the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) will be available in July 2025, bringing the total number of programs offered at UKKM to nine.
All the programs offered have received MQA/KPT accreditation.
