SIBU: The focus on addressing special educational needs and the crucial role of community and parental involvement, alongside other stakeholders, in helping children with autism become independent is both welcome and encouraged.
Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing said while children with autism may appear similar to other children, their behaviour can differ significantly.
He said that a lack of understanding about autism within the community often leads to prejudice against those on the spectrum.
“Therefore, it is essential for everyone to continually update their knowledge and skills in caring for children with autism through conferences, seminars, and talks,” he stated.
Tiong said this in his text speech read out by Political Secretary to the Premier Joshua Ting Fu Ying, at the Autism Charity Art Auction Gala Dinner held at a hotel here, last night (July 27).
Tiong, who also serves as the Bintulu MP, urged the public to empathise with the unique experiences of individuals with autism and to offer both financial and moral support to associations dedicated to helping them.
Meanwhile, on the Auction Gala Dinner, Tiong said that the event’s primary goal is to raise funds for the New Building Project, which is estimated to cost more than RM3 million.
“I am pleased to see that more than 200 pieces of artwork have been donated for the auction.
“Through this initiative, I believe the community has shown remarkable generosity in their financial contributions. Furthermore, this event provides an opportunity to recognise the creativity and talents of children with autism through the exhibition and auction of their artwork,” he added.
Also present were the founders of the Sibu Autistic Association Thomas Ling Swee Chin and Josephine Ting Ching Yung, Sibu Autistic Association President David Ngu Tai Giin, and Sibu Autistic Centre Manager Winnie Siong.
