MIRI, 2 Oct: Establishment of food tubes or food bank in Merbau National High School (SMK) is important to ensure that the welfare of students facing restrictions on food is maintained, especially when faced with exams.
Sarawak Transport Minister, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said that some students are attending school without breakfast and the situation could affect their focus on learning.
According to him, the initiative will be sponsored by him in collaboration with the Parents and Teachers' Association (PIBG) as well as school authorities to help students in need.
"Sometimes students don't come to school, there is no breakfast. I don't want students to come into the exam rooms with no food", he said while addressing the Graduation Ceremony of 5th and 6th Grade Semester 3 SMK Merbau 2026, here today.
He said that the welfare and nutrition aspects of students should be given special attention to the fifth and sixth grade students who will face Malaysian Certificate of Education (SPM) and Malaysian Higher Secondary School Certificate (STPM).
He, who is also a Member of the State Legislative Assembly (ADUN) Senadin said that rapid development in the area has also increased the need for adequate educational facilities to accommodate population growth.
"When I started at that time, this area was still forested, but it had already begun with the development of houses and so on. I plan that this population will continue to grow until we have to add schools", he said.
According to him, the development of educational facilities should be accompanied by population growth in order to ensure that the needs of students in Senadin area continue to be taken into account.
He explained that several new educational facilities are also being developed including Tudan National Secondary School (SMK) and Tudan Jaya National School (SK).
A total of 589 fifth and sixth graders were honored at the graduation ceremony.
