Free programme to equip Bidayuh crafters with skills for sustainable future

KUCHING: Bidayuh crafters will have the opportunity to strengthen their skills in ergonomics, handicraft techniques, sustainable materials, product development and marketing through a free two-day community partnership programme next month.

The programme, titled ”Skills for a Sustainable Future”, is organised under the Social and Community Wellbeing initiative in partnership with the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA), Curtin University Malaysia and Universitas Airlangga (UNAIR).

Scheduled for Oct 9 and 10 from 9 am to 4 pm, the programme will be held at the Conference Room, DBNA Headquarters here.

It is aimed at Bidayuh participants involved in making baskets, mats, handicrafts and accessories, with only 25 places available on a first-come, first-served basis and no participation fee for the programme.

Among the key areas covered is ergonomic work practices, where participants will learn how to work more comfortably and reduce physical strain while carrying out craft activities.

The programme will also provide hands-on training in practical craft skills, including new techniques aimed at helping participants improve the quality and efficiency of their work.

Participants will further learn about sustainable material selection and how environmentally conscious practices can be incorporated into their craft production.

Another key component is product development, which will focus on helping crafters develop new products that meet market demand and potentially turn their skills into greater economic opportunities.

The programme will also equip participants with marketing and promotion skills, including how to present their crafts, share their cultural stories and communicate with customers.

Cultural storytelling and public speaking are also among the areas listed as part of the learning outcomes, alongside ergonomics education, workstation co-design, practical craft training and product development.

The organisers said the programme is intended to strengthen skills, health and enterprise among Bidayuh participants while supporting stronger communities, sustainable crafts and brighter future opportunities.
