MIRI (Nov 2): Young people are urged to engage in volunteer work because it not only develops practical skills and life experiences, but also fortifies community ties and contributes meaningfully to personal and societal resilience.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Datuk Sebastian Ting has emphasised that by helping others, individuals discover the deeper meaning of life while also strengthening their empathy and sense of responsibility.
“When we give with a sincere heart, we not only impact society and the lives of those around us but also foster our inner growth,” he said when officiating at the Persatuan Prihatin Masyarakat Miri (PPMM)’s ‘2024 Rural Community Service’ appreciation dinner at a local restaurant here recently.
Ting, the assemblyman for Piasau, said since one person’s strength might not be sufficient, it would take a large team to make change, and thus, he highlighted the involvement of young people as ‘crucial’ towards continuing to assist those in need.
“Making a difference for people who are less fortunate and producing meaningful results require a commitment to serve the community,” he added.
The dinner was held to thank the dozens of volunteers who participated in the community outreach programme to Long San and Long Keluan of Telang Usan in mid-October.
Also present were Pujut assemblyman Mayor Adam Yii, and PPMM chairman Lee Jun Tak.
PPMM was started by a group of young people about five years ago, and has since grown to draw more than 200 active volunteers.
