KUCHING: Minister of Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Datuk Seri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom stressed on the need for increased awareness and adherence to dog licensing regulations.
He said that licensing is a critical aspect of responsible pet ownership and important in combating the spread of rabies.
“It is not just a legal obligation but also an essential tool in managing the dog population and monitoring vaccination status, which is vital in our fight against rabies.
“Non-compliance can result in fines; more importantly, it hinders our collective efforts to ensure a safe environment for everyone,” he said.
Rundi’s speech was delivered by the director of the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak Datu Dr Adrian Susin Ambud during the World Rabies Day celebration at the Multipurpose Hall in Kampung Semeba here yesterday (Sept 28).
He thanked all stakeholders involved in the ongoing efforts to raise awareness about dog licensing and rabies prevention.
Additionally, he stated that mass vaccination is the most effective measures to combat the deadly virus.
“Vaccinating our dogs is not only a protective measure for our pets but also a vital step in safeguarding public health.
“As dogs are the primary reservoir of the rabies virus in our state, ensuring they are vaccinated significantly reduces the risk of transmission to humans,” he added.
He praised the collaborative efforts of the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak, the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS), the State Health Department (JKNS), and the Sarawak Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SSPCA).
He commended the relevant agencies for working diligently through vaccination campaigns and community outreach to keep both residents and pets safe.
“This commitment not only protects your animals but also contributes to the overall health and safety of our community,” he asserted.
