KUCHING: Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus ignited young minds with its Big Day Out (SBDO) 2024, a platform designed to foster interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among secondary school students.

Held on May 25 and July 20, the flagship event themed ‘Hydrogen Power: Interdisciplinary Innovation for a Sustainable Future’ was a collaborative effort between the School of Engineering and Science and various student associations.

Participants were immersed in hands-on workshops, interactive demonstrations, and insightful talks delivered by Swinburne’s faculty.

“The overwhelming participation and enthusiasm from the schools highlight the growing importance of STEM education,” said Deputy Head of School (Engineering and Science), Ir Dr Jiuan Jing Chew.

“Our focus on hydrogen power as a sustainable energy solution offered students a deep dive into engineering and science principles.”

The collaboration between faculty, schools, and students empowers the community to contribute to a more sustainable future.

Over 200 students from various Kuching schools participated in the two SBDO sessions, with SMK Kuching High and SMK Bako emerging as champions respectively.

Aligning with Sarawak’s clean energy aspirations, Swinburne is committed to nurturing a sustainable future.

“The collaborative spirit among faculty and students is instrumental in empowering our community to drive positive change,” he added.
