Habitual drug offender in Kuching gets nearly six years in jail, two lashes

KUCHING (Sept 17): The Sessions Court here today sentenced a serial drug offender to five years and 11 months in prison, as well as two strokes of the rotan for drug abuse.

Judge Iris Awen Jon ordered for Haslan Mahmudi’s sentence to take effect from the date of his remand on April 13.

In addition, she also ordered for him to be placed under police supervision for two years upon completion of his custodial sentence.

Haslan pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which is punishable under Section 39C(1)(b) of the same Act.

The Section provides for a prison sentence of between five and seven years, as well as up to three strokes of the rotan upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, Haslan used amphetamine and methamphetamine, and had two previous convictions under Section 15(1)(a) of the Act, dated Nov 16, 2021 and July 29, 2022, respectively.

He committed the latest offence at 12.35pm on Feb 20, 2023 at the Kuching District Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department.

Deputy public prosecutor Ruvinasini Pandian handled the prosecution, while Haslan was unrepresented by legal counsel.
