Hawker centre, marina proposed at Rambungan Bridge site

LUNDU: A hawker centre and marina have been proposed at the Rambungan Bridge site to boost economic activity and tourism in the Sampadi Zone.

Tanjong Datu assemblyman, Azizul Annuar Adenan, said the proposal reflects hopes among local communities following the Rambungan Bridge project, which is on schedule for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.

He said building both facilities as ancillary projects to the bridge could open up more economic opportunities for residents, particularly local traders and entrepreneurs.

“I am grateful that the Sarawak Government took over construction of the Rambungan Bridge, which was initially cancelled by the federal government and is now on schedule for completion by the fourth quarter of 2027.

“I hope, together with the Sampadi Zone community, that a hawker centre and marina can be built at the bridge site to boost economic opportunities and tourism appeal,” he said.

He was speaking at the Batang Kayan Regatta 2026 Postponement Ceremony at Lundu Townsquare here today.

The ceremony was officiated by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

Azizul said Lundu’s development must be carried out comprehensively, covering not only infrastructure but also economic opportunities, education, skills, entrepreneurship and basic amenities.

He said cooperation between the government, communities, the private sector, entrepreneurs and youth is crucial to sustainable development in the district, adding that young people should be encouraged into entrepreneurship, technology, the digital economy, creative industries, sports and tourism.

Azizul said the Batang Kayan Regatta is more than a boat race, serving as a platform to strengthen community unity and boost the local economy.

He said the three-day event features exhibitions and sales, Jualan Rahmah, an archery competition, traditional sports, a community concert and the Lundu Heritage Square Fest, with the main regatta contested across categories including the P.193 Santubong Parliamentary Cup, N.01 Opar, N.03 Tanjong Datu and Raja Sungai.

“The Batang Kayan Regatta is not just a boat race but has been designed as a community festival bringing together sports, the economy, health, entertainment and togetherness,” he said.

He hoped the regatta would continue to grow as an annual event that preserves Lundu’s heritage and identity while serving as a catalyst for the district’s economic and tourism development.
