KUCHING: Lim Jin Hai, 60, who has battled Major depressive disorder (MDD) for over three decades, recently sought urgent assistance from local charity Hope Place after losing his home and job due to health complications

Lim, currently an outpatient at Sentosa Hospital, struggles to maintain stable employment due to high blood pressure, high cholesterol and the side effects of his numerous medications.

Despite being diagnosed with MDD, he does not have a disability card, but Hope Place continues to support him with ongoing basic food aid.

Lim previously ran a food stall selling here with his wife; but after their marriage deteriorated, he   worked intermittently as a cook or kitchen helper in various coffee shops.

Recently, Lim was dismissed from his job after falling asleep during working hours due to the side effects of his depression medication.

“I always feel drained and sleepy after taking the pills, but the doctors reminded me that I have to take those pills for my mental health,” Lim told Hope Place.

Despite hitting rock bottom, Lim is grateful for the support of loyal friends, who recently found him a place to stay in Stutong Baru and paid a month’s rent.

His adult son provides limited financial help due to his modest income from working in a coffee shop.
