Hope Place Kuching comes to aid of homeless, jobless man

KUCHING (Sept 20): Hope Place Kuching is lending a helping hand to a homeless and jobless man, who is struggling to make ends meet.

Lim Jin Hai, 60, was diagnosed with major depression disorder (MDD) more than 30 years ago, said the non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“With high blood pressure and high cholesterol, Lim is unable to stay in a stable job for very long because he takes so many medications.

“He is currently an out-patient of Sentosa Hospital, and although Lim is diagnosed with MDD, he has no disability card.

“Lim and his wife used to run a food stall here where they sold porridge. However, their marriage was on the rocks at the early stage, and Lim blames the breakdown of his family’s relationships for his current mental state,” said the NGO in a press statement yesterday.

Throughout the years, Lim has worked intermittently as a cook or kitchen helper at various coffee shops.

He was recently sacked for falling asleep during work hours due to his depression medication.

“I always feel very tired and sleepy after taking the pills, but the doctors always remind me to take them for my mental health,” Lim was quoted saying in the statement.

Lim expressed his gratitude to the many faithful friends near him, despite the fact that he has hit rock bottom.

“Just a few days after I was kicked out from my work quarters, one of my friends found me a place to stay at Stutong Baru and he even helped me pay a month’s rent,” he pointed out.

The statement also said that Lim’s older son sometimes provides financial help to him, even though he merely works at a coffee shop.

Hope Place is thus supporting him with regular basic food aid.
